Overview
Oddly Familiar embodies my year-long artistic journey through The Invisible Realm, exploring narratives and aesthetics while embracing the imperfection and uncanny comfort of AI-generated imagery. This project intentionally moves away from the hyperrealism AI trend dominating commercial work and focuses purely on art, concept, and the unique aesthetic qualities that AI brings to visual storytelling.
The Challenge
While my commercial work for Fortune 500 clients demands extreme hyperrealism, this personal project deliberately embraces AI's unique aesthetic: the uncanny, the imperfect, the not-quite-real. The challenge was affirming that chasing hyperrealism isn't the only valid path and that concept and aesthetics matter more than technical perfection. The project involved multiple tools working in concert: crafting unique moments in still form, developing unifying narrative and voiceover, creating original music, generating video sequences, and editing everything together.
The Approach
Used MidJourney, Magnific AI, and Leonardo for images. Google Veo3.1, Runway, and Luma for video. Eleven Labs for voice over. Suno for music. After Effects for editorial. The workflow mirrors The Moth Academy approach but incorporates a wider variety of tools, demonstrating continued evolution of technical capabilities and willingness to adopt new platforms as they emerge. The narrative explores: "What if we were to fully wake up within a dream? Would that become our new reality?" The uncanny becomes comfort. The strange becomes home. What we cannot name, we recognize.
The Result
Year-long synthesis culminating diverse explorations into unified narrative using a diverse set of Generative AI tools.
