Oddly Familiar

What if we were to fully wake up within a dream? Would that become our new reality? Our waking world fading into distant memory?

The Invisible Realm has always been my solace. No client. No brief. No constraints. Oddly Familiar is a year-long retrospective of what happens when experimentation with multiple tools is given space and time to breathe.

In 2025, while most AI creative work was racing toward photorealism, this project kept pulling me in the opposite direction. When I arrived at the agency, the dominant conversation was about AI slop, a broad label that flattened everything, including work made with genuine curiosity and intention (see what is joy). Oddly Familiar is a deliberate counterargument to that.

Oddly Familiar keeps the uncanny qualities of early AI image generation on purpose. The film brought to life a collection of images generated throughout the year and those qualities are a timestamp of a specific moment in the evolution of the tools I used. Erasing them would have been the easier choice.

The workflow drew from a wide range of generative tools, reflecting continued experimentation across image and video models, voice, and music generation.

This is the space between remembering and forgetting. Between waking and dreaming. Between what is and what feels true.
We cannot put our finger on it, yet it feels oddly familiar.
